Thank you.. Thank you… Thank you to EVERYONE! Thank you for donating money, supplies, time, items for the garage sale and thank you for you prayers and support as I traveled to Guatemala. My time in Guatemala was incredible. Thank you Kala Kaminsky for allowing me the opportunity to visit Our Lady of Fatima and New Dawn. I will never forget the faces of the children at Our Lady of Fatima when we handed out baby dolls, books and soccer balls to the children. They were all so timid at first, but warmed up quickly. I am so anxious for children to arrive at New Dawn. The New Dawn Orphanage is a beautiful place. It is in the mountains and overlooks the city. There is grass for the kids to play on and a swing set and slide. There is a lot of room for the kids to play inside and the house itself is so beautiful!
While visiting Our Lady of Fatima, I had the privilege of meeting Pedro de Leon and his mother Barbara, the owners. Pedro is a young man full of energy and ideas and a passion for the organization and the children. PLEASE visit Our Lady of Fatima’s home page at www.asociacionluzdefatima.org They are doing incredible things there. URGENT!!!! Despite the wonderful things that are happening at OLOF, they are in danger of closing their doors due to lack of funds. The children will be dispersed and the quality of care can not be guaranteed. PLEASE, if you can find it in your heart, to donate just a few dollars, we can keep the kids safe in a loving environment. The economy has hit the world hard and Guatemala is no exception. There are many homeless children and families. I also urge you to write to the State Department urging Hilary Clinton and the U.S government to continue to push for the reopening of Guatemalan adoptions. The homeless rate will continue to rise and Guatemala is already facing a humanitarian crisis . The New Dawn orphanage is also in need of your help. Thank you to everyone, adoptive parents and families and those who are hopeful for adoptions. New Dawn is fully prepared to open its doors to children. There are beds and clothes and toys just waiting for the government to give the word. Although there are plenty of supplies, rent is $950 a month and EAC has been paying rent for a year now with no children to serve. Without monetary support New Dawn will have to close it’s doors before children even arrive. PLEASE if you could find it in your heart to donate today, you can visit www.eaci.com for more info on how and where to donate.
Mary Kinkelaar and I are working hard to get our new website – www.wedoitforthechildren.org up and running. The purpose of the website is to educate and update on the orphanages and the situation in Guatemala. You will be able to link to both New Dawn and Our Lady of Fatima and donate directly.
Please continue to pray for the Guatemalan government that they will be wise in their decision making, that the famine in the mountains will end, that the children will find food and shelter, and adoptions in Guatemala will reopen. Continue to check back for updates and check out the new site!
Blessings,

Jodi

A letter from Jodi

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

The following is a copy of a letter Jodi recently mailed regarding her upcoming volunteer trip to Guatemala.

Dear Friends,
Over the years, many of you have been involved with or know someone who was given the privilege of adding to their family by adoption. We are one of those blessed families. On December 15, 2007, we brought home a precious baby boy from Guatemala. He completed our family and filled the hole in our hearts that had resided here for so long due to infertility.

Our son was born on February 19, 2007 and at just one day old, was placed with an amazing foster mom, Sucily. She had raised 11 foster children before my son arrived and was raising three of her own as well. I can’t begin to explain how incredibly blessed our son was to be held in Fed, played with, read two, placed in a crib, all by himself, and kissed goodnight, every night. To receive such individual and loving attention was one of the reasons we chose to adopt from Guatemala. Because he was so loved and well cared for in his foster home, he quickly grew, flourishing every day, meeting milestones. He slept through the night within weeks after birth, he ate table food at six months, crawled and started standing at nine months and walked at almost a year. He received monthly checkups at the local clinic and all US required vaccinations.

When we picked up our son on December 13, 2007, the foster mom handed him over with tears in her eyes. Tears of joy, for finding a home in which she knew he would be loved and well cared for, but also tears of sorrow. Our son would be her last foster child. The government passed new laws halting international adoptions. Not only was Sucily, the foster mom, losing the children she so lovingly cared for, but she was losing her job and livelihood as well.

European Adoption Consultants, the US-based adoption agency that I worked with through my adoption, has purchased a large property near Guatemala City and converted it into an orphanage. According to the new laws, all children given up for adoption or abandoned by parents who do not have the means to care for them will be placed in orphanages and taking care of by the state. At this time, though, there are no laws governing these orphanages, no regulations to protect the children.

In September, I will be traveling to Guatemala on a mission trip to take much-needed food and supplies to the first wave of children that will be placed in this orphanage. It is my hope and the desire of EAC to hire some of the wonderful foster moms to work in the orphanage as caretakers. While I am there, I will be visiting the orphanage and setting up rooms, buying much-needed supplies and toys, and loving the children there.

Please pray for me, the other volunteers, our EAC representative, and the orphanage workers that we may be able to raise the funds needed for us to travel to Guatemala and to purchase all the food and supplies required to house the children who will begin arriving late June. It is my goal to raise $3,500 for the children of Guatemala. By making a donation you can be part of this needed orphanage.

I pray that you will find it in your heart to help me follow God’s direction to help the children facing an unknown future in Guatemala. Thank you for your thoughts and your prayers.

In God’s service,

Jodi

Jodi es va a Guatemala

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009
Jodi and I — along with our husbands — met during a class hosted by our adoption agency. We had much in common as we were both just starting out with the Guatemalan adoption process. In the many months that followed, we kept each other updated with the little bits of news we would receive on our cases or photos of the babies when they came through. We leaned on each other during times of frustration, setbacks and delays, but we also celebrated adoption milestones.
My husband and I brought our daughter, Claire, home in November 2007. Jodi, with her husband and daughter, brought Matthew home in December 2007. We know how fortunate we are to have these wonderful children in our lives.

I often joke with Jodi that she can’t sit down and relax. She’s always doing something for someone, and I greatly admire her for that. So, it was no surprise to me — well, maybe a little — when she told me she had volunteered to go on a mission trip to Guatemala to help with the new orphanage — The New Dawn Children’s Home –that was started by our adoption agency. I was surprised, though, that in just a matter of a few weeks the trip was scheduled!
Jodi’s trip is fast approaching. I hope you can join me in supporting Jodi as she makes this very special mission to help some of the many Guatemalan children in need.

Mary
